Angela Burns, Market Street School nurse, approached Food Service Supervisor Natalie Winkle with an awesome idea!! Lets get the greenhouse up and working again!! Natalie was thrilled at the idea of being able to use the greenhouse to help the students learn about plants.
From there with a lot of help from some awesome volunteers the Sprouting Spartans pilot project grew!
Now the hope is to try to sustain a year round program. Students meet for one hour after school on Wednesdays. We have many varieties of plants growing despite our late start and unpredictable weather. Our program was funded by donations of money, seeds, soil, and labors of love from volunteers.
In order to continue this program with the new school year, the Sprouting Spartans will be hosting a plant sale on Wednesday May 23rd, 2:45 to 4:15pm after school in the employee parking lot.
Students have worked very hard and are looking forward to showcasing their work. All monies from this sale will go to further make repairs and enhancements on the greenhouse as well as expand the program for us to (hopefully) add more solar vent openers (we added two already), solar fans, and an irrigation system. Our goal is to design a greenhouse that does not utilize any school resources. Also, we are considering developing a hydroponic system that could generate large amounts of healthy foods even through cooler weather months. Kids will soon be distributing flyers for their plant sale.
