Pumpkin Math

October 29, 2009

We spent the morning doing Pumpkin Math. We were divided into groups of four. Each group had a leader. We had already learned about how pumpkins grow, and we learned a poem called Pumpkin.

Each group got a big pumpkin for Pumpkin Math. Before we started, we made estimates about how tall our pumpkins were, how fat they were, how many seams they had, how many pounds they weighed --We each got to hold a 1-pound bag of sand first.-- and how many seeds our leaders could hold in their hands.

Then we got to work. We had to describe our pumpkin, weigh it, and measure it. After that came the real fun! We had to cut our pumpkin and clean it out. YUCK! We each drew a jack-o-lantern face on a piece of paper. Then we decided what we wanted our jack-o-lantern to look like. With some help from our leaders, we carved our pumpkins. They look AWESOME! We had to weigh our jack-o-lanterns to see if they were different than the plain pumpkins. We also had to describe our jack-o-lanterns.

After we cleaned up, we went back to write the correct measurements under our estimates. Some of us made really great estimates. We also had to record our data on the Pumpkin Math chart. We looked at all our data. We found out which pumpkin was the tallest, which one was the fattest, which one had the most seams, which one weighed the most, and which leader held the most seeds.

We had a great time!
