Boardman High School junior Gina Misel’s watercolor painting entitled ‘Lily Pond’ will soon be displayed in the Governor's office in Columbus during the month of May. The piece was among the top 5% of the more than 8,000 high school artworks that were submitted to this year’s Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition.
Gina’s work will be part of the 'Cameo Show' in the Governor's office.
Only 300 pieces of artwork were chosen for the juried exhibit on public display at the Rhodes State Office Tower in Columbus in late April. Gina’s piece was among fewer than 50 additional works chosen to be part of the Governor's private 'Cameo Show' in his offices, and will hang there through the month of May.
Gina’s award-winning work began with a photo she snapped on her phone while on vacation at the Biltmore in North Carolina. She used it as the model for the watercolor painting. BHS art teacher Amanda Bero says Gina worked during school, after school, just about around the clock until she was satisfied. Gina joked about that saying, “I even took my watercolors to Florida on vacation to work on it.” The piece has won three first place awards including the Canfield Fair Art Show, a Gold Key at the Scholastic Art Competition, and now the Governor’s Cameo Award.
Gina plans on studying studio art and art education. She has a passion for all forms of art and sees herself teaching in the future.
