Glenwood Teachers Awarded Grant to Build New Disc Golf Course Disc Golf basket

A group of Glenwood Junior High teachers teamed up to win a $2,700  National Grant from the GPD Employee’s Foundation.  Together, the Glenwood group constructed a new Spartan Disc Golf Course right in time for this beautiful spring weather!

Congratulations Jazz Ensemble 2! Boardman won the 2020 Pinwheels for Prevention Community Spotlight Award presented by Mahoning County Children's Services and the Akron Children's Hospital Child Advocacy Center.

Jazz 2 has played at the Pinwheels for Prevention event for 9 years during April, Child Abuse Awareness month. 

Juniors National Honor Society Induction set for April 14 National Honor Society seniors inducted

Seniors selected for admittance into The National Honor Society in 2020, were formally inducted into NHS on March 24, 2021.  Covid prevented an official ceremony last spring, so the socially distant formal event was held in the gymnasium this year, with family able to watch from the stands.  

This group of 64 seniors will then conduct a second National Honor Society Induction, for those juniors who are to be inducted this year.  That event is scheduled for Wednesday, April 14 in the gymnasium.

LEARN AT HOME WEDNESDAYS : 4TH 9-WEEK SCHEDULE put this on your calendar

Learn at Home Wednesdays will continue during the fourth 9-weeks.

 The Wednesdays affected for the fourth learning period are:

April 14, 21, 28

May 5, 12, 19, 26

April 7 and June 2  are in-person Wednesdays.

UPDATED INSTRUCTIONS FOR REMOTE LEARNER/WEEKEND MEALS:

Meals must now be pre-ordered by Monday each week,  to be picked up on Wednesdays.

IN-PERSON LEARNERS may also order free WEEKEND MEALS- for pickup.

Pickup regardless of which building the student attends, will be every Wednesday, at Boardman High School from noon-1 PM.  Please read more for details.

Boardman Schools Food Service Department is encouraging all families who may qualify for Free/Reduced lunches, to fill out the application, if you haven't done so this year.   FREE/REDUCED APPLICATION HERE

 The USDA now wants to give extra benefits (PEBT/Food Stamp card) to families who qualified in a regular year for meals by lunch application rules.

The Boardman High School Drama Guild is bursting with talent that cannot be contained, even during a pandemic.   The Socially Distant Showcase is a collection of musical songs performed by members of the BHS Drama Guild.  The performances were livestreamed on  December 18.  Click the link below to watch:

GLENWOOD SCIENCE TEACHERS EARN OHIO EPA'S BRANCH AWARD GLENWOOD SCIENCE TEACHERS KRATZER, DIEFENDERFER, FROST, LENHART AND HEAD

Boardman Glenwood Junior High is one of only 5 Ohio schools recognized by the Ohio EPA as a Branch Award Winner for 2020.  The Branch award recognizes schools for their commitment to environmental education, and for actively participating in the 3 R’s--Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Congratulations to Glenwood Junior High Technology teacher Tim Harker, on being awarded Ohio District 8 Teacher of the Year 2021!  

Harker is among a select group of 11 educators from across the state, and represents District 8 which includes 12 Counties in the state.

Greetings to all of our Spartan families (and especially our Senior Families!)

 I know there is a lot of excitement building about the end of the school year, and many questions about what the end of the year is going to look like for our Seniors, the Class of 2021. Let me start by saying that it is our number one goal to give the Seniors the most amazing, memorable, and fun end of the year that we are able to give them--all while meeting all of the requirements for safety as outlined by the local health department.

In a captivating first person account, 15-year-old Boardman High School junior Aroonrassamee Wongkeaitaroon described her experience coming to America from her home in Bangkok, Thailand.

Her essay won the Ohio Civil Rights Commission  2021 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest for juniors across the state.

BHS Math Department Thanks Masons for Big Donation! math teachers holding brand new iPads

The Math department at Boardman High School is now equipped with brand new iPads, thanks to a generous donation from the Boardman Western Star Masonic Lodge #21.  

The Lodge recently donated $5,000 to Boardman Local Schools to be used for technology.  The donation helped provide a new device for every teacher in the High School Math Department.

BHS Honors Breakfast Tradition Continues--Times Four Students Honors Breakfast

The Honors Breakfast is a Boardman Spartan Tradition, but instead of one event with more than 700 students from grades 9-12 in the cafeteria at once--this year it will happen four times with a morning dedicated to each grade.  Seniors who achieved a 3.5 GPA or better for the first semester were honored Monday, March 8.  

 

SPARTAN ENCOURAGING SPARTANS! NFL'S COREY LINSLEY VISITS BHS Corey Linsley visits spartan stadium weight room talks with football team

During a recent visit home, BHS graduate and NFL player Corey Linsley took time to visit with more than 60 members of the Spartan football team.  Linsley worked out in the weight room at Spartan Stadium, and stayed later to talk with our young Spartans. His message was about giving it your all--on the football field, in the classroom, in whatever you do. Linsley talked about work ethic, passion, and pride.

Congratulations to BHS seniors  Aidan Swavel, Julia Gorby, and Salvatore  Buonamici.  The three are among a select group of 15 high school seniors from Northeast Ohio nominated by Congressman Tim Ryan to attend  prestigious U.S. Military Academies in 2021.  

 

Boardman Food Service Awarded $20,000 No Kid Hungry Grant BHS cafeteria workers trained on new food sealer from No Kid Hungry Grant

Boardman School District’s Food Service Department is learning the ropes of a new food sealing machine that will help them better serve our Spartans.

The national charity, No Kid Hungry, awarded a $20,000 grant to Boardman Local Schools Food Services.  The professional Oliver Food Sealer will help us serve our remote students with fresh reheatable meals, as well as students who may be eating in other locations in our buildings for social distancing reasons.

Winter weather is here.  Boardman is updating its  traditional "snow day" policy.  When buildings are closed for severe weather our goal is to allow all students to continue learning virtually.

NEXT YEAR'S DISTRICT CALENDAR APPROVED: 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR GENERIC CALENDAR GRAPHIC

The Boardman Board of Education approved the District Calendar for the 2021-22 School Year at its February meeting.  

The first day of classes for the 2021-22 School year will be Monday, August 30, 2021

Christmas Break is Thursday, December 23 with classes resuming on Monday, January 3, 2022  

Commencement is Sunday June 5, 2022

The CDC recently provided new quarantine guidance for those who have been exposed to COVID-19, but are not showing symptoms.

 

  • 10-day quarantine that does not require testing, provided that there are no symptoms
  •  7-day quarantine if test results are negative, provided that there are no symptoms

UPDATE ON USDA WAIVER: ALL BOARDMAN STUDENTS EAT FREE FREE LUNCH GRAPHIC

Beginning Monday, September 14, all meals served to Boardman students are Free of Charge.  The USDA has signed an extension of the School Nutrition Waiver through the end of the school year, June 2020 or until USDA funds are depleted.  Free meals include school breakfasts and lunches, but not a la carte items.

Students do not need to be eligible for free or reduced lunch to receive these meals. 

BHS TEACHER WRITES BIOLOGY HELP BOOK Boardman Bio teacher Heather Moran holding her book

BHS Advanced Biology teacher Heather Moran has written a book titled Biology Help for the Virtual Weary Student.  It uses her lecture based stories to make some of the complicated Biology concepts easier to understand and remember.  The book is available now on Amazon.

Congratulations West Blvd. Elementary: Two-Time National Blue Ribbon School!! National Blue Ribbon School 2020 Emblem

West Boulevard Elementary School is honored to be named  a National Blue Ribbon School 2020.  U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos this afternoon (Sept. 24) recognized West as one of only 367 schools in the country to earn the prestigious honor, and one of the very few in the nation to have won the award twice.
