MAKING HOLIDAY SURPRISES FOR YOUNG AND OLD

Students making tie blankets

A Holiday project just before break at Center Intermediate School has everyone smiling!  The entire 5th grade split into two groups, half made tie blankets to send to children at Akron Children’s Hospital.  The other half were decorating book marks and making little holiday packages for local nursing homes.

Both projects are guided by WEB leaders.  WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) is a student mentorship program intended to aid the transition of incoming students to middle school.  The 6th grade WEB ambassadors lead many activities over the year to provide support and guidance to all the 5th graders. This holiday project is a favorite.

“ All the material for more than 40 blankets was donated by the BCIS PTA, and the kids really enjoyed making every single one,” said School Counselor Mindy Depietro.  “It gives them a chance to work together, get comfortable and make new friends--all while doing something good for others.”

The bookmarks and other goodies will be delivered to seniors at local nursing homes right before the holiday.  “Our students enjoy doing the artwork, and making it all colorful,” said Depietro. “They feel good about brightening someone else’s day.”
