BGJHS STUDENT EARNS THE PRIZE FOR WIND TURBINE DESIGN

Cam Jeffrey with wind turbine designed for kidwind challenge

Cameron Jeffrey, a 7th grader at Glenwood Jr. High is the first Boardman student to take home the National Prize for winning the KidWind Challenge.

For nearly two years, dozens of  Glenwood Junior High students have been participating in a National Competition called “KidWind Challenge.”  It’s a monthly online contest that puts design skills and trial and error to the ultimate test.

The students  use wind turbine kits purchased through the Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence teacher grant.  These 7th graders design and build their own wind turbines to generate electricity. They record the data, and send their results  to the online competition.

Cam Jeffrey won the National Prize for a “solo team” for the month of March--a $50 prize.

According to the REcharge Staff, who sponsors the national challenge, “After evaluating all the teams, REcharge staff scored this team the highest in an average of performance, creativity, and quality.”
