Boardman School District is fortunate to have a strong and dedicated group of board members who combine their business and professional expertise with their passion for children and community service.  Our Board Members are regulars at Boardman sporting events, art shows and music concerts because they are truly Spartan Involved and Spartan Proud!

Candace Rivera is currently serving as the Board Vice President. She was elected in November of 2023 to begin her first term on January 10, 2024.  She is a licensed funeral director who manages a staff of more than 30 people.

A  proud Boardman resident, Mrs. Rivera and her husband Ralph say they decided to move here more than 15 years ago for the quality of education in the Boardman Schools. They have raised two Spartans who've been very active in Boardman sports and many other opportunities.  Mrs. Rivera has volunteered with PTA at every level, as well as several Spartan sports boosters. She has also been active in community service including Hospice of the Valley and Boy Scout Troop 60.

John W. Fryda joined the Board in January of 2018.  He is VP of Purchasing for Compco Industries, QFM Stamping and Compco Quaker Mfg.,  in charge of all purchasing and vendor contracts. Mr. Fryda is currently serving as President of the Board.

Fryda and his wife, Marie, have resided in Boardman for more than 30 years and their three sons are Boardman graduates.   Fryda has served as a board member of the Boardman Schools Fund For Educational Excellence, and has been very active in coaching community baseball, soccer, and as a  member of the Spartan Dugout Club.

John Landers is the longest serving member of the School Board, elected in November of 2009, he took his seat on the Board in  January of 2010.    

Mr. Landers is a proud graduate, Spartan Class of 2000.  He has a degree in Computer Science from Case Western Reserve University, as well as a Masters in Engineering and Management.

Boardman School District is fortunate to have a dedicated group of board members who combine their business and professional expertise with their passion for children and community service.  Our School Board members are regulars at Boardman sporting events, art shows and music concerts because they are truly Spartan Involved and Spartan Proud!

Tom Varley was appointed by the Board on August 28, 2024 to fill a vacated seat. He will serve until December 31, 2025, and must run in the 2025 general election to serve after that date. 

Tom and his wife Kim (A BHS alumna)  are the parents of four: a daughter who graduated from BHS in 2022, two sons now in the high school, and a daughter at Center Intermediate. He has served on many booster groups and as a member of the Boardman Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence.

Varley is the Director of Human Resources for Compco Industries in Columbiana County.
