BGJHS REPLACES ALL WATER FOUNTAINS WITH NEW WATER FILLING STATIONS

“The grant was awarded last spring, providing the new water fountains worth a total of more than $6,000,” explained Glenwood science teacher Scott Lenhart.  “At this point, all but one has been installed, and the students and staff are really happy to have them.”

BGJHS is a very earth friendly and environmentally aware school.  This latest grant follows a string of accolades and cash grants over the last three years.  Glenwood received the “Green School Award” last spring from the Northeast Ohio Education Association.  The school also received a $16,000 Federal grant two years ago for an Earth Tub Composter that now sits in the school courtyard, and helps to reduce cafeteria waste by about 35%.

Glenwood science teachers conducted a cafeteria waste audit in 2016, and based many of their earth friendly changes and grants on the results.  That waste audit found that about 500 beverage bottles were being discarded per week...the majority were plastic water bottles.  While those can be recycled--the premise of the water filling stations is to reduce waste and limit the use of resources needed to produce, transport and dispose of the plastic water bottles.
