Boardman Bounces Back After Tough Loss with 3-2 Victory over Berea-Midpark After suffering a heartbreaking extra-inning loss to conference rival Howland on Friday night, the Boardman Spartans bounced back in a big way Saturday afternoon with a gritty 3-2 road victory over a strong Berea-Midpark squad. Boardman found itself trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning, but the Spartans answered in clutch fashion in the top of the fourth. Kate Thames sparked the rally after reaching on an error, and Kenzie Cherne followed with a single to put two runners aboard. Later in the inning, Ellie Wymer delivered the biggest hit of the day, driving a triple into the right-center gap that scored both runners and tied the game at 2-2. Moments later, Mikayla Rivera reached on an error that allowed Wymer to cross the plate and give Boardman a 3-2 advantage. That would be all the support needed for Addie Kowacich in the circle. Kowacich turned in a complete-game performance, working all seven innings to earn the win. She allowed just five hits and two runs while striking out four and walking four. Her biggest strikeout came in the final inning with the tying run on second and the winning run on first to slam the door on the Titans. The Spartans were also backed by outstanding defense throughout the afternoon, highlighted by several key plays from Lanie Joyce and Rivera that helped erase scoring threats and limit damage. Offensively, Boardman collected six hits on the day from Addie Rudge, Wymer, Kowacich, Joyce, Thames, and Cherne. With the victory, the Spartans improve to 17-8 on the season. Boardman will return to action Tuesday when they host Westlake in a Division III district semifinal matchup

The Boardman Lady Spartans claimed a sectional championship Thursday night in dominant fashion with a 19-0 victory over Youngstown East. With the win, Boardman advances to host a Division III District Semifinal on Tuesday, May 19th at 5:00 PM against the Westlake Demons.

Boardman wasted no time taking control, erupting for nine runs in the bottom of the first inning. A combination of wild pitches, walks, hit batters, and defensive miscues helped fuel the early surge. Emily Swantek reached safely on an error that brought home two runs, while Kenzie Cherne and Mikayla Rivera each delivered sacrifice flies. Addie Fiddler added a single, and Addie Rudge drove in two more with a base hit as the Spartans jumped out to a commanding 9-0 lead.

The big blow came from Rudge, who launched her fourth home run of the season — a three-run shot that extended the lead even further.

Boardman continued to pour it on in the third inning. Miller singled to drive in a run, and Reagan Ridgley collected an RBI single in her first varsity at-bat.

In the fifth inning, Jillian Bennett picked up her first varsity hit in her first varsity at-bat. Jocelynn Torres later doubled home a run, and Cherne added an RBI single to cap off the scoring.

The Spartans totaled 11 hits and drew 10 walks offensively. Fiddler, Miller, Cherne, Swantek, Bennett, Rivera, and Ridgley each recorded one hit, while Rudge and Torres added two apiece. Rudge led the offensive attack with five RBIs. Following behind were three RBIs by Miller and two each by Cherne and Swantek.

Emily Swantek was equally dominant in the circle, earning her second varsity victory. The right-hander tossed a complete five-inning shutout, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out 10.

With the victory, Boardman improves to 16-7 on the season. The Spartans close out conference play Friday on the road against Howland before traveling to Berea-Midpark on Saturday for a tune-up game against another quality opponent.

The Boardman Spartans softball team extended its winning streak to five games Monday with a convincing victory over conference foe Howland Tigers.

The Spartans and Tigers were locked in a pitcher’s duel through the first three and a half innings. Boardman finally broke through in the fourth when the Spartans capitalized on a Howland error at shortstop that allowed the game’s first run to score.

Boardman’s offense came alive in the late innings. In the fifth, the Spartans sparked a rally with back-to-back singles from the bottom of the order by Emily Swantek and Lanie Joyce. Ellie Wymer was then hit by a pitch to load the bases before Addie Rudge delivered a clutch one-out, two-run single to left field. The Spartans continued to add on when Addie Kowacich lined a single to right to bring home another run.

The Spartans added insurance in the sixth inning to take full control. Gabi Sferra led off with a double to right-center field before Swantek drove her home with a single to center. Wymer followed with a base hit up the middle to plate another run. Later in the inning, Rudge grounded out but drove in another run as Boardman carried a comfortable 7-0 lead into the seventh.

Sferra was dominant once again in the circle for the Spartans, earning her 11th win of the season. She tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just five hits while striking out nine and walking none. Rudge also made her presence felt defensively behind the plate by catching two Tigers napping on the base paths.

Offensively, Wymer, Rudge, and Swantek each recorded two-hit performances. Kowacich, Mikayla Rivera, Sferra, and Joyce all added one hit apiece as Boardman totaled 10 hits on the evening. Rudge led the Spartans with three RBIs.
