Rudge’s Late Blast Lifts Spartans Past Louisville, 3-2

Coming off a tough loss to conference rival Canfield, Boardman wasted no time bouncing back, using late-inning heroics to edge Louisville, 3-2, in a tightly contested battle.

The Spartans found themselves in an early deficit after Louisville’s leadoff hitter launched a home run to open the game. Boardman’s offense remained quiet until the third inning, when Kate Thames sparked the lineup with her first career varsity home run, knotting the game at 1-1.

From there, both teams settled in for a defensive showdown. Behind strong pitching from Gabi Sferra, the Spartans made several key plays in the field, including tracking down deep fly balls and turning a crucial double play to keep Louisville at bay.

Boardman broke through in the sixth inning. Ellie Wymer legged out an infield single to start the rally, and Mikayla Rivera followed with a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt to move the runner into scoring position. That set the stage for Addie Rudge, who delivered in a big way—crushing a two-run home run to center field to give the Spartans a 3-1 advantage.

Louisville responded with a run of its own and brought the potential tying run to the plate, but Sferra shut the door, striking out back-to-back hitters to secure the victory.

Sferra was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing six hits, two runs, and one walk, while striking out 12.

Boardman was outhit 6-4, but made the most of its opportunities. Rudge, Wymer, Thames, and Autumn Miller accounted for the Spartans’ hits.

With the win, Boardman improves to 9-2 on the season and will travel to Gilmour Academy on Saturday morning for a rematch after winning the first meeting on opening day.

Lady Spartans’ Win Streak Snapped in 7-5 Loss to Canfield

The Lady Spartans saw their eight-game win streak come to an end Wednesday with a 7-5 loss to Canfield, just two days after defeating the Cardinals 7-1.

Boardman’s middle of the order provided plenty of offensive production, but defensive struggles in the middle innings proved costly. Canfield plated three runs in the third and three more in the fourth—highlighted by a home run—to build a 6-0 advantage.

Despite the setback, Gabi Sferra reached a major milestone in the circle, recording her 300th career strikeout. She pitched three innings, allowing five hits and four runs while striking out four. Addie Kowacich came on in relief, tossing four innings with six hits allowed, three runs, and four strikeouts.

The Spartans began to chip away in the fourth inning when Addie Rudge and Kowacich delivered back-to-back home runs to cut into the deficit.

Canfield responded with a run in the top of the fifth, but Boardman refused to go away quietly. In the sixth, the Spartans rallied for three runs. Rudge led off with a single, and Kowacich followed with an RBI triple. Kenzie Cherne added a run with a groundout, and Mikayla Rivera blasted a solo home run to left field to make it 7-5.

That would be as close as Boardman would get, as Canfield retired the Spartans in order in the seventh to secure the win.

Boardman falls to 8-2 on the season and will look to bounce back Thursday on the road at Louisville—marking the teams’ first meeting since the Spartans’ regional finals victory a year ago.

Offensively, Boardman’s 3-4-5-6 hitters—Rudge, Kowacich, Cherne, and Rivera—combined for six hits, five RBIs, and five runs. Emily Swantek also contributed with a hit in the effort.

Boardman fights back to beat Laurel 11-9

The Lady Spartans offense came alive last night in an 11-9 win, led by Ava Gaps who tied the single-game scoring record with 8 goals. Strong transitions from defense to offense played a key role, helping the Spartans generate consistent scoring opportunities. The team pushed the pace effectively, turning stops into quick attacking chances throughout the game. Crisp passing and smart decision-making allowed the offense to stay organized and efficient.
Val Hoysack, Pickles Vondran, and Olivia Cuevas each added a goal to round out the attack and keep the pressure on. The Spartans showed great balance, with multiple players contributing and staying involved in the offensive flow. Off-ball movement and spacing created openings that the team capitalized on.

The defense started off shaky giving up 4 goals in the first 1 quarter but got things put together by allowing just 5 more for the rest of the game. Between the pipes, Catherine Lorenzi stepped up in the 2nd quarter racking up 10 saves on the night. The pressure was tight as Anna Bowes and Jayce Bogerd executed good turnovers, effectively stripping the ball and flipping the field's momentum. Once the ball was in our possession, the collective composure of Suri Stevens, Gianna Mordocco, and Payton Konnerth ensured good ball control to get the ball out of the defensive zone. It was a good defensive performance that set the tone for the entire game and secured the win.

Spartans Blast By Canfield Behind Kowacich’s Dominance, Extend Streak to Eight

Power at the plate and a commanding performance in the circle lifted the Boardman Lady Spartans to a 7-1 win over rival Canfield on Monday.

Senior Addie Kowacich led the way, tossing a complete game while striking out nine and allowing just one run, as Boardman improved to 8-1 on the season and pushed its winning streak to eight games.
