Students at West Boulevard Elementary recently used their creativity to support a community effort to fight hunger. The project began when the Boardman store manager at Giant Eagle spotted Principal Al Cervello shopping and asked if West Boulevard students would be interested in helping promote the store’s food campaign benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.
A group of students in grades K–3 were quick to volunteer, and decorated brown paper grocery bags with colorful artwork and messages of encouragement. The bags are now displayed throughout the checkout aisles, where shoppers may have noticed the students’ designs while making their purchases.
Store management says the artwork has drawn more attention to the campaign and helped increase register donations. The food drive runs through April, and the store is already halfway to its $10,000 goal.
