Boardman students outside with a drone on a landing pad

Boardman students took their learning to new heights during the inaugural Drone Recess, joining students from Struthers, MCCTC, South Range and Campbell for a hands-on day of drone technology and aviation.

Sponsored by Youngstown State University (YSU) and the Mahoning County Educational Service Center, the event was held at YSU’s Williamson Airfield in Canfield. Students worked alongside peers from area schools to pilot high-end, real-world drones used for search and rescue, infrared surveillance, construction and drone racing.

The experience also gave students an opportunity to explore careers in aviation. Haaski Aviation, a guest of Boardman High School Drone Pilot Instructor Joe Hollabaugh, introduced students to the field of aviation and shared information about flight lessons and the steps involved in becoming a pilot.

For students, the day was as much about exploration as it was technology—and they were already looking forward to the next opportunity. The next Drone Recess is planned for May.
