Boardman High School students got a firsthand look at the dangers of distracted driving through the Safe Mobility Project’s Teen Safe Driving program, which brought a hands-on experience to students using SIDNE, the Simulated Impaired Driving Experience go-kart.
Students navigated a controlled driving course while attempting to text and drive, experiencing how quickly even a simple distraction can affect a driver’s ability to maintain control.
The program emphasizes that texting is just one of many distractions facing teen drivers. Students also learn about the risks associated with passengers, loud music, eating, applying makeup, strong emotions and fatigue.
The Teen Safe Driving program is offered through a partnership between Akron Children’s Hospital and the Goodyear Foundation. In 2025, the Safe Mobility Project expanded its reach through SIDNE-on-the-Go, bringing the hands-on distracted-driving experience directly to schools throughout the Mahoning Valley.
The message for students is straightforward: Stay focused. Stay in control. Get home safely.
